You should have seen my eyes light up when I walked into the Liquor Store and saw this guy on the shelf. Ever since I first tried the infamous Hobgoblin, i've been interested in sampling all of Wychwood's monthly brews. This one though, was a little unexpected.
Presentation: It's another one of those breweries i first picked up for their art. I appreciate how Wychwood values "visual mood setters". The label features a Scarecrow (who would'a thought?) Inside the classic Wychwood label design. Besides the drawing, the design isn't very interesting. The label makes me think i'd find this at whole foods, or some other natural product emporium. It pours a pale yellowish gold color, and is pretty damn clear. I'm hoping this isn't too light.
Smell: Refreshing from the first whiff, with a combination of flowers, yeast, wheat, and i even picked up what smelled like sourdough bread (?). My glass stein showcased the sharp carbonation, that being quick and persistent.
Taste:
Dominant Flavor: You can tell it's a pale ale for sure, but it is quite mellow. Defiantly organic because it tastes really fresh. Nothing really astonishingly special here though. Your run-of-the-mill pale ale.
Crispness: Has a mellow bitter kick, but the carbonation feels how it looks and draws around the mouth if you let it sit. Still not very impressive.
Aftertaste: Sweet hoppy flavor, but like everything else, it's mellow.
Overall Bitterness: Not too bitter at all, sort of a "rookie introduction" kind of bitterness, not too much bite but you get the point.
Drinkability: One major upside of this beer! It's a very drinkable as a pale ale. Usually pale ales are very hoppy and must be sipped on. This one is different, you can put it down like a light-bodied beer, which was greatly unexpected.
Overall: The big factor about this beer is drinkability, that being said, is it really worth the $5 pint? My answer is no, If this came in a 6 pack for $5-$6 id be totally down to buy, but it's not. I mean i like to enjoy Wychwood, they seem to put a lot of love into making REAL beer, but what the hell is this beer doing in their year-long collection. Hopefully it's just a fluke because Wychwood has only but impressed me with their other brews. If you want Wychwood get Hobgoblin instead, but if you must have i'd advise trying better pale ales after.
